MSL Seals

Safety critical industries such as the medical, pharmaceutical, food, petroleum, aerospace, and power (both thermo-nuclear and traditional thermal) generation industries, face unique sealing challenges. In some of these applications any type of contamination or leakage will be disastrous to individuals and the environment. In addition, some industrial seals are required to operate effectively at extreme temperatures and in corrosive environments. When standard HPS offerings are inadequate to meet the stringent and unique requirements of such industries, Machined Spring Loaded (MSL) seals are custom designed and manufactured to do just that.

The profiles of MSL seals are unique to each customer and application since they are designed to meet specific challenges such as sealing in high or cryogenic temperatures and aggressive chemicals. Each MSL seal is made up of a precision machined thermoplastic or thermoplastic-elastomeric jacket and is energized by a metal or elastomeric energizer. Materials for both jacket and energizer are carefully selected based on the application. For example, an MSL seal for the food industry could be manufactured using a food grade PTFE jacket and a stainless-steel energizer. Some MSL profiles are depicted below for your preview and information. To match the optimized solution for your specific sealing requirements, please contact one of our professional sales engineers.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-1

HPS-E-1

This seal, primarily designed for either ID dynamic or OD dynamic rotary manifold/swivel applications, has a uniquely profiled dynamic surface with improved sealing and lower friction than conventional manifold seals. Operating parameters are typically 3,000 psi at speeds of 10 RPM. This design has also been used successfully in linear applications and offers improved sealing over standard PTFE piston seals.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-2

HPS-E-2

This triple lip MSL is well suited for sealing viscous and/or abrasive media in linear applications. For applications that are less than 180 oF, UHMWPE is typically used as the jacket material because of its superior resistance to abrasion. Various filled PTFE materials are available for higher temperatures, and/or when sealing fluids that may not be compatible with UHMWPE.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-3

HPS-E-3

This MSL seal has a radiused lip profile which is preferred for dynamic sealing of lubricating media (the radiused seal lips are more tolerant of minor hardware eccentricity). This seal is predominately used in linear applications but can also be used in slow rotary or oscillating applications such as chemical processing Swivel joints.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-4

HPS-E-4

A helical wound MSL utilizes a coil spring (that is wound from a flat ribbon of Stainless or Elgiloy). This spring creates a lip load that is approximately 3 times higher than a typical Cantilever Spring. The higher load improves the sealing characteristics of the seal but does shorten the wear life in dynamic applications. Typically, this design is used for low speed or static sealing from Cryogenic to 550 oF. They are typically used in Valves, Compressors and Expanders.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-5

HPS-E-5

This design uses a double wound spring which doubles the spring load. It is a common design for improved sealing at cryogenic temperatures. The high spring load help to prevent the OD seal lip from thermally contracting away from the mating hardware. This design is used predominantly in Sealing Valves, Expanders and other equipment that requires seals capable of effective operation in extremely cold environments.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-6

HPS-E-6

Wobble piston compressors do not have a wrist pin; the piston and connecting rod are a single entity resulting in the piston being on an angle while at mid stroke. These compressor pistons are typically sealed with a filled PTFE washer. The washer is clamped in place by the piston. The OD of the washer is larger than the bore, which causes the washer to form into a cup when installed into the bore.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-7-R

HPS-E-7-R

These MSL seals have a skived sealing lip on the dynamic ID Sealing lip. This design is primarily used for dynamic sealing of non-lubricating abrasive media. Potential applications include sealing in: Hot melt glue Valves, Adhesives, Sealant pumps and valves, and drilling mud in Down hole tools.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-7-P

HPS-E-7-P

Same as the HPS-E-7-R but designed as a piston seal for dynamic sealing against bores.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-8

HPS-E-8

This is a spring energized face seal that can be produced for internal or external pressure. Seals are typically used as static joint seals or slow speed oscillatory seals in swivel joints.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-9

HPS-E-9

This is an economical seal or wiper that is produced from UHMWPE or filled PTFE Compounds. This type of seal utilizes an elastomeric o-ring to energize the seal lip; the o-ring also acts as a static seal in the gland. Media compatibility and temperature range is typically limited by the elastomeric o-ring material.

MSL Seals - HPS-E-10

HPS-E-10

This seal is specifically designed for sealing valve stems in valves used in oil and gas industries. The sealing jacket can be produced from various grades of PTFE; the spring is a heavier cantilever spring produced from Elgiloy.
